People react to stressful situations differently. What one finds stressful, another may not at all. Anything in life can cause stress. Different things can lead to stress. When people keep on thinking of something, such thing will definitely accumulate in their minds. This situation causes stress to such people.

The common causes of stress include:

1. Problems in the family
2. Being unhappy in your job
3. Financial matters
4. Not having enough time
5. Divorce
6. Illness
7. Death of a loved one
8. Traumatic event like rape, natural disaster, theft, etc.
9. Emotional problems such as depression, anger, anxiety, low self -esteem, grief and guilt

There are 3 methods of dealing with stress. They include:
1. Self management
2. Self - help
3. Medication

Self management

You can learn the healthier ways to cope with stress through self management. It helps you to reduce harmful effects of stress through changing the way you view stressful event. This helps to stop stress from spiraling out of control again in the future. Every individual has control over his or her life style, emotions, thought and the way he or she handles problems. Self management can be seen as changing situation that is stressful when you can, changing the way you react when you can't, caring for yourself as well as having time for rest and relaxation.

Self management techniques can be acquired through reading self - help books. It can also be gained through attending stress management course or going for counseling.

Self help for controlling stress

1. Breathing
There are a lot of breathing techniques that can help you to control stress. Try the technique that can slow down your system and make you relax.

2. Exercise
Exercise is an effective stress buster since it helps to maintain both the physical and mental health.

3. Cut down or avoid alcohol and drugs.

4. Division of labour
When you have too much responsibilities at work, try to share them.

5. Nutrition
Make sure you provide a healthy and balanced diet for yourself.

6. Cut down the consumption of food or drinks that contain caffeine.

7. Time
Set time each day for yourself. Use that time to plan for yourself and after that you can relax.

8. Talk
Talk to people you believe that can help you out with your worries.
